How to Get a Safe Pedicure

Updated: Apr 29, 2023

Pedicure season is upon us and it is important to prioritize safety during your pedicure appointment. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. Choose a salon that follows or exceeds state board procedures to prevent the spread of infections, preferably a salon that sterilizes its nail tools.

  2. Avoid shaving or waxing your legs for 24 hours before your appointment to reduce the risk of skin irritation or infection.

  3. Don't hesitate to ask your technician to use a new nail file or buffer (required by state board for every client), or to skip any steps that make you uncomfortable or cause pain.

  4. Avoid using any sharp objects such as a foot rasp (looks similar to a cheese grater) or overuse of cuticle cutters, as they can cause cuts and increase the risk of infection.

  5. I prefer the dry/waterless method or a pedicure in a foot bath without whirlpool jets. At the very least, ensure a plastic liner is being used in the footbath to help promote a more sanitary environment.

  6. If you have any existing foot or nail conditions, such as fungal infections or ingrown toenails (that have broken the skin), it is best to first consult with a podiatrist for treatment. Treatment of these conditions is out of the scope of practice for a nail technician.

Taking proper precautions before a pedicure is essential to creating a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable experience!
